Like HisWifeTheirMother has said, you need to learn about exposure. A good book for this is "Understanding Exposure"

And yes, get some rain sleaves (very inexpensive, I keep a 2 pack in my camera bag at all times), your T2i isn't weather sealed nor are your lenses (unless you are shgooting with L series glass) and even with the sleeve, wipe your lens and body down and make sure to let your body dry out in a nice dry area to prevent mold.
