How to properly put on a 52mm lens hood on Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II lens?

I'm having trouble putting on a Promaster SystemPRO Universal Lens Hood on my EF 50mm f/1.8 II lens. I'm not sure if I'm putting it on properly; the petals end up diagonal and not like they're supposed to be (long petals top and bottom, short left and right). I'm also not sure if I'm using the rear-locking ring correctly.

I would guess that you put the lock ring on then clip the hood to it in the correct orientation. ?
