Betta Fish Quarantine
Quarantining your new female betta fish is exceedingly crucial and can be challenging given the requirements of quarantining multiple fish in separate containers. Female betta fish, besides needing to be kept separated in quarantine, also need to be kept warm, between 70 to 75° in order for them to stay healthy during the process. Nevertheless, the temperature of their single containers tends to fluctuate widely due to the containers small size.
Keeping a dozen or more female betta fish warm and individually quarantined is going to call for some special equipment. You could already have some of this stuff lying around. Either way, here's what you'll need to do it:
- 30-or 40-gallon aquarium or a long, tall (over 10") storage tub
- CLEAN wide mouth Mason-style quart jars
- Adjustable Heater of appropriate size
- Air pump, tubing and wand-style air diffuser with suction cup fasteners
- Digital thermometer with high/low temperature alarm
Essentially, you're going to make a heated "water bath" to put the jars of fish into. Start by attaching the heater width-wise to the bottom of the aquarium in about the very middle. Next, attach the air-diffusing bubble wand parallel and close to the heater. Plug in the air pump and heater. Adjust the temperature control until the water is constant at your target temperature.
Now transfer your female betta fish to their temporary new homes in washed and well-rinsed quart jars. Just one fish in each jar. Each jar should be filled to within an inch or two of the top and you may need to cover each jar with screen so the bettas don't jump out. To cut down on their stress levels, you might also want to add a little floating plant, like a sprig of Water Sprite or a Java Fern, to each jar.
After the water in the aquarium or tub reaches and maintains the objective temperature, carefully place the quart jars containing your female betta fish into the water bath. Leave an inch or so between each jar. In the same way, make sure the jars nearest to the heater and bubbler have plenty of clearance by at least two or three inches. Some of the water bath might need draining out as you go due to the displacement from the jars. The water in the aquarium should be even with the water in the quarantine jars, or just a little below, so that there is no risk of the jars floating and tipping over. The action from the bubbler will keep the outside water circulating gently around the jars and the inside and outside water temperatures will gradually match. Place a dark colored towel over the top of the aquarium or tub to prevent excessive heat loss. Leave the sides uncovered so your female betta fish will have some light.
Now, you've solved a few problems: 1) all of your female betta fish sorority members are in independent quarantine; 2) they are all being kept warm; 3) and they can see each other and can get visually acquainted. This system also allows you to keep an eye on them and to switch their jars around so they have exposure to new neighbors every few days. It is also offers simple access to their jars for feeding and water changes. Fresh water change must be done every other day or so for optimal health.
